The Ainu people, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, have made good use of wild plants and medicinal herbs. I have been researching the wisdom of these ancestors because I believe that there are many things that are still useful today. In addition to the plants used by the Ainu, Hokkaido has a wealth of natural resources that can be used to improve health even today. With the aim of developing products from these resources, we have established a laboratory at Hokkaido University Business Springs on the canvas of Hokkaido University, where we can collaborate with Hokkaido University, Hokkaido University of Science and Technology, and the Hokkaido Industrial Research Institute, so that Genetic Biolab Co., Ltd. can be the center of joint research. We identify bioactive substances, study the chemistry of the active ingredients, inhibit enzymes, evaluate their activity in cells, and finally outsource animal and human clinical trials to outside research institutions to confirm efficacy. In collaboration with universities, Genetic Biolab Co., Ltd. strives to bring products that are beneficial to health to the world.

I have been involved in the research of polyphenols (tannin), which have recently become a hot topic, for over 40 years. In research on the petals of the Hamanasu flower, a flower of Hokkaido, I was in charge of the separation and purification methods of tannin and structural research, which led to their commercialization. On the other hand, I have also been involved in research on “kombu”(kelp), a specialty of Hokkaido, for nearly 30 years, and was one of the first to focus on the rhizoid. The rhizoid is the real root of kombu, which is a different part of the kelp from the “kombu root”, and it is a material that has not been studied much so far. We will continue our research and aim to commercialize it. Currently, we are collaborating with Kitami Institute of Technology, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Hokkaido University of Science, the Hokkaido Industrial Experiment Station, and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, and will continue our research to develop products that make the most of Hokkaido's unique agricultural and marine products.
